Mekor Chaim - Ollech + Tol

Mekor Chaim

Residential building project at Mekor Chaim, Jerusalem. The design is based on connecting to the neighborhood fabric through an active ground floor, which includes commercial spaces, a public building, and communal amenities for residents. The apartment mix is diverse, and the requirement for Sukkah balconies in all units led to a planning and design solution that maintains privacy, comfort, and a consistent aesthetic throughout the building.

In the Mekor Chaim building in Jerusalem, the design started from a human scale and the everyday life of the neighborhood. An active ground floor, with commercial spaces, a public facility, and an open lobby, connects the building to the surrounding public realm. The requirement for Sukkah balconies in all apartments became a design opportunity, creating architectural variety while maintaining privacy, comfort, and aesthetic cohesion.

The ground floor functions as an active, multi-purpose level, featuring a commercial frontage facing the street, a building entrance lobby, a public facility, a residents’ gym, service areas, and a garden apartment connected to the outdoor space. Above it, the gallery floor complements the public and commercial program with storage spaces and an open gallery, creating spatial depth and functional continuity between the levels.
